Why hire a Digital Marketing apprentice?

Are apprentices part of your recruitment plan? Incorporating them might just be the smartest move you'll make.

Not all businesses immediately entertain the prospect of apprenticeships when planning to grow. But things have come on leaps and bounds in recent years. Today’s apprentice is a far cry from the widely held perception of young people seeking on-the-job training.

This kind of hire doesn’t just bring an extra pair of hands to your team – it also has the potential to elevate your entire organisation.

How? Apprentify explains…

Create freedom and opportunities for current staff

If you do have a couple of experts in-house already, hiring a new team member through an apprenticeship can free these individuals up. They can then focus on the bigger, more complex tasks with the potential to yield long-term revenue.

The trainee can take over many of their day-to-day responsibilities and learn the ropes of the business whilst they’re at it. This is an effective way to balance workload – as well as helping you refine your project management as an organisation.

You also finally get the freedom to test how adept your current staff are in leadership roles.

Future-proof your business

When apprentices cut their teeth at a particular company and enjoy the experience, they’ll want to continue in the same environment once their placement is over in a permanent capacity.

Comprehensive apprenticeship programmes breed loyalty – leaving you with a hard-working, committed and highly skilled member of staff to boost engagement and retention rates. By hiring an apprentice, you’re demonstrating your desire to implement a long-term plan – which ensures the advancement of the company for years to come.

With the right apprenticeship provider by your side, you’ll also enjoy focused support that enables you to develop marketing specialists. Apprentify, for example, offer an exclusive Path to Mastery programme that ensures your new hire is skilled in the areas that bring the greatest benefit to your business.

Save on salary

Hiring an apprentice costs considerably less than a graduate. And you won’t necessarily need to compromise – not all apprentices are fresh out of school. Some have already undergone further education and want to build on this with on-the-job training.

The average starting salary a marketing graduate can expect is usually around the £20,000 mark. For an apprentice, it’s £12,000. As neither tend to have industry experience, both will need their hand held, so apprentices offer similar value at a lower cost to your business.

What’s more, the Apprenticeship Levy means that you could either save money or recover tax by hiring an apprentice. For large businesses paying the levy, it’s simply a no-brainer.

So, why Apprentify?

Since the arrival of the Apprenticeship Levy, countless providers have sprung up to meet growing demand. However, to get the best out of hiring an apprentice, it pays to partner with company that specialises in the particular skill set you’re looking for.

Apprentify focus solely on digital marketing apprenticeships, and have a unique Path to Mastery that leaves you with an experienced marketer at the end. Not only that, but you benefit from a free recruitment service to help you find the right person for your business.

Ross Green, Managing Director of Manchester-based digital marketing agency Embryo, offers some perspective as to why Apprentify are the smart choice:

“Working with Apprentify is, and always has been, an easy and smooth process. From the superb range of candidates that SallyAnn sent across at the interview stage, to the catch-ups with Dale, who is always so helpful, we believe that Apprentify is one of the best digital marketing programme and talent providers we have ever worked with, and we have no doubt that we will continue to use them in the future.”

How Apprentify's Path to Mastery Benefits You And Your Apprentice

Digital marketing is a broad discipline involving a huge range of specialist skill sets. But when you bring on an apprentice, or upskill a current employee, you want to be left with someone truly qualified in their area of work – not just a capable marketer.

For a digital marketing apprenticeship to deliver true ROI, there needs to be a degree of specialisation within the broad marketing spectrum. That’s why Apprentify offer an extra qualification as part of our curriculum, designed to make your employee an irreplaceable part of your team.

The Path to Mastery, which is an optional qualification in the final months of the programme, gives learners the opportunity to advance their knowledge in a chosen area of marketing. It’s unique to Apprentify, and what’s more, it’s completely free of charge.

What is the Path to Mastery?

Where the apprenticeship itself covers the standard, core elements of marketing (including: principles of marketing, principles of coding and data analytics), the Path to Mastery gives learners the chance to gain additional skills in specialist areas, such as graphics, web design, web development or social media marketing.

This exclusive option within Apprentify’s programme makes sure learners go above and beyond the normal standard of the average Level 3 Digital Marketing qualification. It leaves your apprentice/employee with a specialised qualification to ensure they become a real asset to your company.

Anyone on or ahead of target in their studies can go down several pathways, chosen alongside their employer. By specialising in a skill set that’s most relevant to the business, employers will receive a better return on investment.

Not every company is the same, so why would the training be? With a focus on the technical as well as the engagement side of digital marketing, Apprentify will train your apprentice/employee in the skills that are relevant to your business.

How many pathways are there?

Employers and employees can choose from either the Technical Path or the Digital Engagement Pathway. Decisions should be made based on the needs of the business. Both are designed to enhance expertise in a certain area of digital marketing.

They cover:

The Technical Path

The Digital Engagement Path

How does it benefit the employer?

The Path to Mastery is a distinctive and complimentary attribute to Apprentify, that allows employers to tailor their apprentice’s learning to suit the needs of their business. This added qualification will then allow your apprentice to thrive in your company and provide you with a greater return on your investment.

It’s not just about the here and now, either. Apprentify can also train your apprentice in skills that your company might not currently have in house, future-proofing your business and even allowing for succession planning. All in all, it has the power to boost business efficiency, open the doors to growth and ultimately improve performance.

Employees with specialised skills are highly sought after in the marketing industry. So make sure you don’t pass up this chance to develop your apprentice’s skill set in a way that’s both beneficial to you and them.

Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity

With most training and apprenticeship providers charging thousands for the qualifications that Apprentify offer, you don’t want to miss out on this opportunity to advance your company and develop a passionate young person’s expertise.

For further information on the Path to Mastery, call 0333 996 0167 or email [email protected].

How Apprentify Takes The Stress And Expense Away From Recruiting An Apprentice

How Apprentify Takes The Stress And Expense Away From Recruiting An Apprentice

When hiring a digital marketing apprentice, you want to be sure that they’re right for the role. With more young people seeking to gain qualifications through apprenticeships, a solid recruitment procedure is essential to finding someone who fits.

Traditionally, there are two options:

  1. Do it yourself, or
  2. Pay an apprentice provider thousands to take away the burden. On the one hand, this can be a stressful and time-consuming process, while the easier route comes at a hefty price.

Apprentify do things differently. Clients receive support with their recruitment drive free of charge, with a proven method for sourcing, assessing and matching the right candidates to digital marketing roles. We do the hard work, so you don’t have to…

The Apprentify difference

Apprentify specialise in digital marketing apprenticeships. This distinct focus has resulted in a watertight process for recruiting and educating up-and-coming digital talent, which includes an assessment centre designed to evaluate relevant skills.

Generalist apprenticeship providers often fail to appreciate the diversity of ‘digital marketing’ as a whole. A young person with a passion for coding, for example, wouldn’t fare very well in a social media agency. And vice versa.

By developing a multi-task digital marketing assessment centre, as well as guiding applicants through their unique talent assessment funnel, Apprentify ensure that only suitable candidates are put forward for a role. So when it comes to shortlisting, you have peace of mind that all applicants will be a good fit for your company.

five steps to successFive steps to ensure you get the appropriate apprentice

Looking through hundreds of CVs is a thing of the past. Apprentify save you time and money by doing the bulk of the work for you. Their process can be broken down into five steps:

  1. CVs are screened and applicants are shortlisted based on their suitability and potential.
  2. A telephone interview is conducted to get to know the applicant more, discovering their interests and confirming their understanding of digital marketing.
  3. A virtual assessment session tests capabilities in areas such as blog writing. This is the most important step as the applicant’s skills, knowledge and behaviour is evaluated.
  4. Maths and English tests are then conducted to make sure the applicants who passed the assessment session are working to an appropriate level.
  5. The CVs of applicants who succeed in this process are put forward to employers.

This vigorous recruitment process ensures the best outcome for everyone involved, as content agency Making You Content discovered:

We appointed Apprentify to help us source a digital marketing apprentice for our growing content agency. As we’ve never hired an apprentice before, we were completely new to this arena, and SallyAnn was extremely helpful in guiding us through the process and what to expect. The experience was very smooth, and within the space of weeks we had found the perfect apprentice for our agency. SallyAnn and Dale made sure the onboarding process fitted around our business, and as a result Grace has quickly settled in with the team. We’re looking forward to seeing how the programme develops and working closely with the Apprentify team to complete the apprenticeship.

Don’t struggle by yourself

Whether it’s your first time hiring an apprentice or you’ve been there before, getting the recruitment process right is essential. But don’t struggle by yourself, or settle for agencies charging thousands. By partnering with Apprentify, you’ll have specialist support every step of the way – completely free of charge.

Digital marketing apprenticeships: Giving you the edge by ‘walking the walk’

Digital marketing apprenticeships: Giving you the edge by ‘walking the walk’

I’ve yet to meet an organisation that doesn’t want to increase its online profile. Being able to market our products or services is no longer what sets you apart…it’s the base-line. This is because digital marketing is an effective way to increase leads, conversion rates and retention.

Companies have a number of ways to do increase their digital marketing efforts.

They could use an eternal digital agency, which works well but can be expensive.

They could employ an experienced marketer, which can sometimes mean employing someone with ‘old habits’. This can also be quite an expensive route.

Many employs these days chose a digital marketing apprentice, either to complement these approaches, or instead of them. Due to government funding this can be a cost-effective way of adding fresh talent to the team. Talent that can be moulded to fit your ethos.

Crucially, a marketing apprentice doesn’t just mean have to prove they have learned the complex theory behind digital marketing techniques. They also have to prove competency and behaviour.

This means delivering actual tactical marketing campaigns for their employer. It also means ensuring they are adopting the attitudes and approaches that you demand.

So, imagine having that new team member, hungry to apply themselves, working towards your social media, content, email marketing and advertising goals. Imagine them reporting back to you on the efficacy of a recent campaign, and recommending how the next one could be even better.

They aren’t employed just to talk the talk. It’s our job to make sure they walk the walk.

Apprentify are an experienced training provider who guide our clients through this process. This includes recruitment, training and assessment. We are passionate about delivering the very best digital marketing apprenticeships available, without compromise.

Our truly flexible digital marketing programme has been designed to ensure that the employees get the very best techniques and coaching.  With our 128 hours of online training and 435 hours of off the job learning we ensure that they get the right focus to make them a success.

Digital marketing apprentice recruitment, getting it right through feedback

How can applicant feedback improve recruitment for digital marketing apprentices?

Last month I wrote a blog that went into some detail about why Apprentify’s digital marketing apprentices were right for your business. I spoke about our in-depth recruitment process and the steps we have put in place to ensure only the best candidates are sent to your business.

This month I want to discuss one of the main steps in our recruitment process, the assessment session and how this has gradually got more successful over time through applicant feedback.

Each assessment session is 4 hours long and I complete one each week. The sessions are in depth, engaging, effective and cover the below elements;

As you can see there is a lot to fit in the 4-hour time period so creating a great environment for the applicants was key for this process to work and we have overcome some bumps and changes along the way.

We started off with an idea of what information should be included on the assessment session and what activities we feel will provide us within a clear insight to their current skills and knowledge within digital marketing. We knew we would not get this right first time and we would be tweaking the session for months to come. So, with this is mind we created an anonymous feedback form to be completed at the end of the assessment session. We wanted real honest feedback that we could use to improve the sessions which is why we decided on anonymity.

Throughout this blog you will see word clouds which contain feedback from my assessment sessions.

Apprentice/applicant engagement is a huge part of my role at Apprentify and it is always great to see so much positive feedback coming back through. It was great to hear that the sessions were ‘engaging’, ‘informative’ and ‘helpful’.

Just as importantly and to enable me to make relevant changes, it was also great to receive some constructive criticism in certain areas. Some of the feedback was the allocation of time for tasks, certain parts didn’t flow well, some tasks were too complicated to follow, and some instructions were not clear enough.

This may seem straightforward feedback but after tweaking the session here and there weekly through this feedback it has made such a positive impact to the sessions overall look and feel. I am still constantly improving the session and it would not be as successful as it is now without all the feedback I have received.

Teaching a new dog new tricks - digital marketing apprenticeships

Taking on a new marketing assistant or having someone move departments into a marketing assistant role is huge undertaking for most businesses.  Very rarely do businesses get it right. It is sometimes a case of 'lets just see how it goes'.

Career or personal development is very hard, it takes focus and a huge amount of effort to get it right.  Digital marketing for example is at the forefront of the new way of marketing and it things change every day at a fast pace.  So teaching a new employee or existing employees new tricks is sometimes hard. It is made even harder because businesses sometimes just can't find the time to devote to developing their own people.

At Apprentify we see a trend with the real industry leaders.  They know the value of training staff but they also know that they need help in doing it.  These industry leaders engage with apprenticeship providers to ensure that they get the best out their staff they know at a level of an assistant, executive or apprentice that this is where the real knowledge development is.  They know that if they invest at this end that this is where the drive will come from maybe not straight away but in years to come.

Businesses who invest in developing their other staff into into digital marketers know that they will see huge returns on investment.  They also know that like coaches, like Apprentify's, will keep at the forefront of the latest tricks and techniques that will get their business higher, faster and larger than their competitors.

So what would it mean if you were just that little (or alot) higher, faster and larger than your competitors?

Industry leading businesses know what it means which is why they ensure that most their staff they take on are put through an apprenticeship like Apprentify's.  Our digital marketing programme has been designed to ensure that the employees get the very best techniques and coaching.  With our 128 hours of online training and 435 hours of off the job learning we ensure that they get the right focus to make them a success.

So if you are looking to train your existing digital marketers, move people the role or employ new staff make sure that you have the right focus and training in place.  Because to teach people new tricks and then get them to see where they can use it within their business is so important.

Why Apprentify Digital Marketing Apprentices are right for your business

Businesses interview many potential digital marketing apprentices that are just not right for their role. So why do Apprentify’s apprentices stand out from the rest?

One of the main parts to Apprentify's recruitment process is the 5 in depth assessment steps. All these steps ensure only the best quality and most relevant applicants are progressed through to the employers.

Review – All CV’s and applications are reviewed to first check for prior learning and suitability for the level 3 digital marketing apprenticeship.

Telephone Interview – Once all prior learning has been confirmed, applicants will complete a telephone interview with the Apprentice Recruitment Executive. This call allows Apprentify to learn about the applicant in more depth, with discussion points such as software knowledge, experience with websites, creativity, analytics and much more. If the applicant produces strong enough skills and knowledge within these areas, they are then progressed onto the next step.

Assessment session – This is probably the most in-depth part to the 5 steps. The assessment session is conducted over a 4-hour period, allowing Apprentify to learn first-hand of the applicant’s skills, knowledge and behaviours. Specific tasks are set and reviewed such as creative writing, researching, peer interviews, data analysis and a technical skill scan.

Applicants also get the chance to view the digital marketing apprenticeship in detail, ensuring they understand what forms part of the programme and what their own personal commitment would be to complete.

Maths & English – As Maths and English play a huge role in the life of a digital marketing apprentice, it is important to ensure that all applicants are working to the relevant level of the apprenticeship. For all applicants who are successful at the assessment session, they are set further assessments specifically targeted to test their current Maths and English skills.

Matching – If applicants are successful at getting to this point, they are ready for their CV’s to be sent out to employers, but are they a right fit?

This fifth and final step see’s Apprentify review skills wanted by the employer against the specific skills of the applicant. For example, if an employer is looking for a little experience with design software’s or content writing, then the applicants with that skill set will be sent to the employer.

It is only after all the above is an applicant’s CV sent across to one Apprentify’s employers. This provides piece of mind that any applicant viewed has come through a thorough recruitment process and skills have been cross referenced against their vacancy.

Safeguarding in Apprenticeships - Are you doing enough?

Last week I attended the NSPCC Designated Safeguarding Officer 2-day course held at their Education and Training Centre in Leicester. Having worked in a few very successful (and a couple 'not so') training providers, and having completed copious online Safeguarding courses in my time, I figured that we had quite a robust policy and process in place at Apprentify https://apprentify.com/ …?

Reality...

Turns out, we have some work to do!
Has your provider got the following:

Taking the time to review your own practices by attending recognised courses/events can really 'open your eyes' to the potential improvements that can be implemented into your business, especially when they affect people's lives.

Nobody can afford to sit still and believe they're doing 'enough' #continuousimprovement

Invigorated by my new learning, I'm off to update our Quality Improvement Plan, that is aligned to our Business GROWTH objectives https://apprentify.com/why/, as part of my new CLIMB Development Programme #lovemyjob #alwaysroomforimprovement #qualityimprovement

Turn Iron Into Gold

I saw this on LinkedIn earlier today. It got me thinking about digital marketing apprenticeships and how we can help you.Turn your digital marketing team into value

A Bar of Iron Costs £5...
made into horseshoes its worth is £12...
made into needles its worth is £3,500...
made into balance springs for watches its worth is £300,000.

Your own value is also determined by what you are able to make of yourself so choose wisely.  It is so important to remember, that in most cases, unless you are really lucky your life will only expand for the better if you expand yourself.  So it is down to you to make sure that you develop your skills, knowledge and behaviours in ways that will benefit you the most.  For some people they are OK as a horse shoe, for others it is a needle and for the few they relish at being the spring.

For me I went to university and I then did my post graduate diploma in marketing (level 7). From there I went on to do an institute of directors certification in company direction (level 9).  Over the years I have done many thousands of hours of CPD (continuous personal development).  Now I am not saying this to show off but what I am saying is that I never rested.  I always wanted to learn and expand myself.  I wanted to invest in my worth so I could always give my employers the best value I could.

Choosing going to college  / university vs. doing an apprenticeship is a choice. It's not for everyone but both routes offer ways that add value to you.   We all start off at the same level and some advance quicker than others but it is what you put into yourself that will make your value more than others both in your career and your personal life.

So choose your worth and aim to make sure you are the best at what ever level you aim for.
